Men's Section

The men's section of the existing Hersham Bowls Club was formed in the year 1900 by a few members of a local church (St. Peters) who wanted to extend the activities at that time by adding the game of flat green bowls.

They made only one club rule in those early years, and that was to the Fixture Secretary that: "there were not to be any games arranged for Sundays". This rule remained for the majority of the early years when the club bowled at Pleasant Lane, until they moved in the late 1920's.

During the 1920's and 1930's, the Men's Championship was dominated by two bowlers: E.Dobson and E.Cottle, the latter winning the Championship four times in six years, his progress being stopped by the Second World War.

Records of the club during the period of the Second World War were not kept, but bowling still took place. Records were re-established again beginning in the year 1950.

From the 1930's up until 1972, the club bowled at a green on Pratts Lane, and it was during this time that the membership began to increase. The Club Championships in the 1950's and 1960's were dominated by the following three bowlers, W. Roberts (winner 5 times),  G . Woodger (3 times), and L. Leveridge (3 times). L. Leveridge later went on to win the Club Championship four more times in the 1970's, making a total of seven Championships, which still remains a club record as we enter the year 2000.

In 1972 the men moved to bowl at the present location at Coronation Recreation Ground, Molesey Road, Hersham, and continued to be a men's-only club until 1989. In this year, the club merged with the Hersham Ladies, who had previously moved to Coronation Recreation Ground in 1984, sharing the green with the men.
